Explore the great city of Rotterdam by bike! With well-maintained paths all throughout the city, Rotterdam is the perfect place to cycle. Discover the city at your own pace, as you pedal your way past historic and modern sites! Take a leisurely stroll down The Walk of Fame Starboulevard, or ride over to the nearby Maritiem Museum Rotterdam and Buitenmuseum. Be sure to climb your way to the top of Euromast Tower and take in the gorgeous views of the city. Visitors also stop to admire the Erasmus Bridge, which spans the largest harbor in Europe! After you work up an appetite, stop in at Pannenkoekenboot, or the “Pancake Boat” and savor every bite of those tasty pancakes!

RealTraveler Chad Van Cleve tells of his experience:

“Rotterdam is not at all what we expected. It has lots of green space and there is a huge park with a beach minutes from our home. There are classic windmills, canals and bikes everywhere. The city (and country) has bike paths and a culture of biking that often forces motor vehicles to yield to bikes. The bike roads take you all over the city as well as the country” (more…)

RealTravelers Jason and Guy share:

“With helpful local maps and recommendations it took us only a few minutes to orient ourselves and head off to the Boimans Museum, the leading local art institution and repository of a sweeping at collection spanning the whole of modern Europe’s history…We cannot recommend the Boimans highly enough, for its collection dating to the 13th century, through today - including thoughfully curated collections of modern commercial goods and objects, models for toasters that never were. Strange installations, a huge manufactured East German pottery exhibition, and a great selection of contemporary art. I even saw the real Franz Marc “The Lamb” which I had as a poster in college” (more…)

Need to get away? Want to travel in style? Take a cruise along Southeast Asia and enjoy all the culture these diverse countries have to offer!

Explore the awesome city of Mumbai! There’s no better way to travel around than on a luxurious cruise ship. As you dock in several cities in Southeast Asia, you can’t help but discover the uniqueness of each destination. Mumbai has many great attractions, including the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market and Haji Ali Mosque. Be sure to check out the Flora Fountain! Usually full of vendors, Flora Fountain is great for shopping around and taking in everyday life. Next, the Chor Bazaar is a must-see! A place unlike any other, shop for beautiful antiques and admire the intriguing artwork. Finish your busy day by watching the sunset on the Arabian Sea at Marine Drive, a common tourist attraction! Before you board the ship for your next destination, sample some of the delicious cuisine, as Mumbai is full of flavor– in every sense!

RealTraveler Traveling Nomad shares adventures off of the cruise ship:

“We hired a taxi driver who took us from the ship to the famous Jain Temple in Bombay which was an absolutely beautiful visit, surrounded by people who are so respective of life that they may tape their mouths shut so that they may not accidentally swallow an insect. The atmosphere, or energy is a better word, in the temple was really something to feel, brief as it was. Then we went to visit the Hanging Gardens, the main garden/park in Bombay. It is a misnomer because there are no actual hanging plants. The garden is constructed over the main water reservoir in Bombay which is why it is called “hanging”. The gardens were lovely and there were many whimsical topiaries, and people were playing tag and having picnics on the grass. It was really hot so we then went on to visit Gandhi’s home and museum. To see where he lived, sit in his library and see the books that he read, read his correspondence, and view the dioramas that depicted his life of nonviolent social protest was really very special. We ate at a restaurant that was recommended by someone on board ship and it was delicious” (more…)

This week we will explore fun and adventurous methods of transportation! Feel the excitement as you board a train, bike your way through a new city, or simply lounge on a luxury cruise line!

Discover the splendor of the Rockies, as you take a train ride through Vancouver, Canada. Sit back and relax, as your eyes trace the outline of these majestic mountains. Taking in the scenery from your window seat, you can catch a glimpse of wildlife roaming freely about. The train makes overnight stops at several locations, including Kamloops and Jasper National Park in Alberta, giving you the opportunity to delve into each new destination! You might even enjoy a ride on the Jasper Tramway! However you choose to explore Canada, you will be enchanted by its endless beauty! It’s just around the bend!

RealTraveler Brisbird shares the adventure in “Rocky Mountaineer Train:”

“The Gold-Leaf carriages have clear dome ceilings that give the best possible views during the train ride. Each car also has its own dining room downstairs, which serves 5-star three course meals. Taking in the splendor of the vistas, being brought drinks to your seat, going downstairs for meals - what difficult days these were!! We head off from Vancouver at about 8:30 am, and are introduced to our hosts for the trip, Dana and Sharla. These two young ladies are very nice and act as our tour guides answering questions and giving us commentary on places that we roll by. We take so many photos we don’t know which ones to put up on the blog. The views are just amazing, the ongoing mountain ranges, the flowing rivers and lakes and the trees and landscapes” (more…)

Brisbird continues her train travels:

“We get some excitement early on in the trip today as a black bear is sighted. All passengers on the train rush to the right side to get a glimpse of this animal. I try my best to grab a shot with my camera, blindly holding the camera up in the air, hopefully aiming in the direction of the bear. Joe is out the back when this happens and I am hoping that he gets a real good shot. After the excitement passes, I check my photo and I can’t believe I got a good (enough) shot. Most people got the backside of the bear only, but I managed to get a full side shot of him” (more…)

Lake Placid, New York makes for a fantastic fall getaway for the whole family!

With biking, hiking, and even heritage tours, you will never be bored. Enjoy the beautiful scenery as you discover all that Lake Placid has to offer. Practice your swing at one of the many golf courses or even go antique shopping and browse Adirondack crafts. Further your relaxation with a day at the spa, or indulge your taste buds at Candy Man Homemade Adirondack Chocolates! Bringing the entire family? Try camping or kayaking with the kids for a back-to-school weekend getaway!

RealTraveler kforecki shares:

“Eric made a spontaneous turn and we headed toward Lake Placid, NY. We ended up taking the Veterans’ Memorial Highway up Mountain Whiteface for absolutely SPECTACULAR views of the Green and Adirondack mountains. THIS was the truly spectacular, breathtaking part. (and my favorite part of the trip so far.) We actually hiked up a portion of the mountain (only 1/5 mile, but we had to earn every inch of it!) before hanging out at the top, and I could have stayed up there forever.

When we reluctantly left, we drove to Lake Placid to see the Olympic Stadium. We were able to walk around it a little and see the figure-skating and ice hockey rinks from both the 1932 and 1980 games. (for those of you who have seen “Miracle” - we saw that ice rink!) We also took a lap around the speed-skating rink, which is now a running track in front of the awesome high school building. Lake Placid overall is a pretty nice place — it seems like the “up north” of New York, where New Yorkers might come for an outdoor vacation. After walking around a bit and sampling some fudge, crepes, etc., we finally headed off to Vermont” (more…)
